This Friday 5th March is a Pupil Free Day. It is a full day of Professional Development for all staff at the College.
A brief outline is below:
The first half of the day will be presented by Dan Petro.
- Dan is a Behavioural Analyst, who grew up in USA, lived in Australia for many years, but has now returned to USA and family (grandchildren mainly)
- I have worked with Dan for many years and I am very pleased that finally he gets to become part of the BSC team
- The focus of the session (there are others to come during the year) will be around learning what the behaviour of the students is telling us
- Behaviour at its core has 2 purposes
1. To gain something
- We need to watch the behaviour, recognise the “tells”, pre correct and then provide for the needs
- Ha Ha, if only it was that simple
- Anyway we are on a journey of continuous improvement and this work will support that goal
- I am supremely confident that we will all learn a lot as we connect with Dan.

In summary ………“The TRUST program utilises a cultural change approach that recognises the need for a parallel process of support for staff and children.
Specifically, the program aims to:
- Increase whole-of-school knowledge about the prevalence and impact of trauma and adversity in children;
- Embed sustainable trauma-informed practices within schools;
- Increase staff efficacy while reducing staff stress;
- Improve focus on staff wellbeing;
- Increase children’s engagement in learning;
- Increase positive relationships between school staff and students;
- Increase positive approaches to managing student behaviours in schools;
- Increase emotional coping strategies of students; and
- Increase parent and carer knowledge about the impact of trauma and adversity in children and promote family strengths”.

Note to the community: Tuesday 16th February 2021 1.00pm
Hello all: A few quick and key messages to ensure that the messaging from the College is clear, timely and precise.
Swimming Sports : This was due to be held on Thursday 18th Feb. It has been cancelled.
The PE / Sport team are currently working on a “Plan B”.
At this moment in time, all students will be returning to school on Thursday for normal timetabled classes.
I know this news about the swimming sports will disappoint many, but there is truly no choice at this time.
Friday 19th Feb breakfast BBQ: This was planned for the families of our current Year 7 students.
This has been postponed and will be arranged for an alternate date. Keep your eyes open for when.
THURSDAY 18th Feb: This is a normal school day and all students are expected on site.
I am confident that you will understand that a “call” had to be made on these events in a timely manner.
Thanks for your understanding.
Should there be any changes, due to an announcement by the Victorian premier, than we will let you know as quickly as possible.

Communication regarding THREE day Lockdown 15/2/2021
Dear Parents and Carers
I am writing to provide further information about our school operations this coming week.
As you know, all Victorian schools are moving to a three-day period of remote and flexible learning from Monday 15 February to Wednesday 17 February inclusive.
As we did last year, we will do all we can to support the wellbeing of all our students and to ensure that, as much as possible, learning continues over these three days.
Information that might be of assistance to you in talking to your child about COVID-19 is available. If you are concerned about your wellbeing or that of your child, please contact the school so we can talk with you about how we can best assist. Other sources of support include: Parent Line 13 22 89 and Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800.
The Department COVID-19 helpline is also available on weekdays from 8:30am to 5pm on 1800 338 663. If you know a family who speak a language or languages other than English and you know they would like further information, interpreting services are available by phoning 131 450 first.
For families with a child with a disability, the Association for Children with a Disability (ACD) has additional information.
Your child’s learningOur teachers have already provided information to their students about activities during this time. This includes accessing Compass for lesson plans, WebEx details and other instructions provided.
Resources to support your child’s learning at homeThe Department has a range of options for you to continue to support your child in their learning, available at the Learning from Home webpage.
A web page with Learning from Home tips is available at: Support your child’s learning
and this is available in more than 30 languages on Translated advice about learning from home.
On-site supervisionOur school will provide on-site supervision for students in the following categories:
Digital devices
If you still have a device (dongle) the Department has reactivated all internet services that were provided and used during remote learning in 2020.
Camps and excursionsAny excursions we had planned for these three days will need to be postponed. We look forward to be able to provide you with information about the rescheduled date/s as soon as we can.
And, finally, a reminder that if you, your child, or a family member develops symptoms of COVID-19 you should get tested at a COVID-19 testing facility and stay home.
Each family should regularly check the list of public exposure sites in Victoria (where a person with COVID-19 has attended), and if anyone in the family has attended a site at the times listed, follow the instructions given.
Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or contact the school if you have any concerns.
Yours sincerely

LATEST REPORT FROM THE PRINCIPAL 12/2/2021
Dear Parents and Carers
Following today’s announcement that from 11.59 pm Friday 12th February 2021 all of Victoria will move to stage 4 restrictions until 11.59pm Wednesday 17th February 2021. All schools in Victoria will close and we will move back to flexible and remote learning. This will begin on Monday 15th February until Wednesday 17th February, unless advised otherwise by the Department of Education.
The return to Remote Learning is a critical response to keeping us all safe and healthy. I understand that this is very short notice and for some families this will be quite challenging, however I believe that we have the right practices in place to support the learning of our students during this period.
Until such time as we are advised otherwise all students will be learning from home during this stage of restrictions. The purpose of remote learning is to minimise the movement of people within the community – students, parents and staff. The only exceptions to this are
There will be a skeleton staff working at school to supervise these students.
During remote learning our offices will be open 8.45 am to 3.30 pm.
We will keep the school community informed as new information arrives.
Any questions please call the office 5150 4800.
Alternatively learning hubs can be contacted via email on:
Year 10, 11 and 12 malgobila@bairnsdalesc.vic.edu.au
Year 8 and 9 wargomerrin@bairnsdalesc.vic.edu.au

Good morning!
In fact I must be truthful …. I was a little grumpy this morning when I realised things had changed overnight and now “MASKS ARE BACK” .. when inside!
I was hoping it was only Melbourne, but NO, it is definitely all Secondary Schools in Victoria.
So the short version is:
I am hoping that this is only for a very short time, I’ll keep you posted.

So the short version is:
- Everybody on the College site must wear a mask when indoors.
- When outdoors, this is not required
- When teachers are giving instruction in class, they can remove their mask for that time.

HELLO WELCOME TO 2021
Wednesday 21st January 2020
This is going to be a very exciting year. I have my fingers, toes and eyes crossed that it will be uninterrupted and we can get back to some form of normality with our College programs and Teaching and Learning.
I was listening to David Howes (Deputy Secretary) yesterday and he spoke of returning to normal. Yeh! We have received the latest Operations Guide and the key points are as follows:
- Face masks are no longer compulsory, however masks are recommended and must be carried by all staff and students.
- If students are absent due to border restrictions, the College will provide work and connection opportunities via Webex.
- All staff have completed modules on Infection Prevention and Control.
- Additional cleaning will continue to be in place for Term 1 at least.
- Any interstate College trips will need to be checked against the travel advice of the time.
- Assemblies, camps and excursions are back.
We are on our way to a fantastic year. If you have any questions, please just ask!
I was thrilled with the VCE / VCAL results and offer a massive congratulations to both Will Balharrie and Olivia Flynn as the 2020 male and female Dux. The number of students who successfully completed their course and have been accepted into Uni etc. has been fantastic. Big congrats to all students and the team of teachers.
Bus Interchange:
This area of the school services almost 2000 students per day - morning and afternoon! We have added additional fencing and gates to ensure safety for all students from all schools that use the interchange. This is a NO CAR zone. Please do not enter this area - all students need to be dropped off and picked up outside the school boundaries! As I am sure that we will agree - kids and cars don’t mix!
Uniform:
Get it out, make sure it is clean and get it ready for Day 1 (put your mask in your pocket).
Classes:
Be well prepared for classes, because we are up and ready to go straight into classes.
Make sure that your laptop is charged and in your school bag too!
Phones:
After our summer break many students will have become attached to their phones once again.
Please remember that, as per Department policy, no phones are allowed at school.
Time to detach ourselves from these devices!
We are all looking forward to seeing your faces and moving forward in an even more successful year at the College – after all it is all about maximising the opportunities for our kids!
Talk soon
